SECTION – A (READING) 20 MARKS

Q1. Read the passage carefully and answer the questions that follow: (8 Marks)

lndia has sustained significant decline in malaria cases, halving numbers to 5.1 million in 2018 from 9.6 million the year before. This followed a 24% decline in 2017, according to the World Malaria Report 2018. This year, the cases have fallen across all states except Himachal Pradesh, Tripura, “Uttar Pradesh and Lakshadweep. Its early days yet to declare that India is on track to reach its goal of Zero indigenous cases by 2027.

The learnings from the polio eradication drive that led to India being declared polio-free by the World Health Organization in 2013 show that the last mile is the most difficult, when missing a single case can lead to outbreaks that infect dozens before they are contained. In the early 19905, polio paralysed an average of 500-1,000 children every day, but mass vaccination campaigns brought cases down to 265 by 2000. But just when the goal was in sight, the numbers jumped to 1,600 in 2002 and infection registered highs of 866 and lows of 66 until eradication in 2014.

Vaccination made eradicating polio and smallpox possible, but malaria is a more complicated case. Malaria, which is a parasitic infection that spreads between people through the bite of the infected female anopheles mosquito and causes symptoms like fever, headache, chills and vomiting, can be eliminated only by stopping indigenous transmission of the infection. Rapid diagnostic tests make it possible to test all cases in makeshift camps and treat everyone with malaria. This, along using insecticidal bed-nets, has helped reduce numbers, but to achieve elimination, tracking and testing of all fever cases have to be scaled up to stop importation, include monitoring everyone who is from, or has visited, a malaria endemic country. India has a long way to go, but the data indicates it is headed in the right direction.

1. The whole month of shravana is regarded as being special to Shiva. The ice lingam increases and decreases in size with the waning and waxing of the moon. Full moon day on the last day of the month is considered auspicious for darshan of Shiva at Amarnath as this is when the ice lingam reaches its full stature. Thousands of devotees have been paying their reverence to this naturally formed ice lingam situated at an altitude of 12,756 ft to the south of Zoji la on one side and to the north-east of Pahalgam on the other side.

2. Swami Vivekananda, while paying a visit to the holy cave, was mystified by the ice lingam, for this is the spot where Shiva had dwelt upon subjects of creation, iife and immortality. Swamiji had an exalted spiritual experience of which he later said, “Lord Shiva appeared and graced me.” He called the place religious, inspiring and extremely beautiful.

3. As the legend goes, Shiva had to traverse the peaks and ridges of the Himalayas to find a place to narrate the mysteries of life and immortality to his consort, Pan/ati. He took a break at Amarnath cave for this. Finally Shiva transmuted into an ice lingam.

4. The bottom pan of the lingam, which is four sided, remains underground; the middle part, eight-sided,
is on a pedestal and the top, worshipped, is the rounded part. The three parts symbolise Brahma at the bottom, Vishnu in the middle and Shiva on top. The lingam is a transitional state between that with form and the formless, symbolising both the creative and destructive powers of Shiva.

5. Puranas describe it as a source of the universe and Shiva as the Supreme Lord. Skanda Purana symbolises it both as the limitless sky and that which pervades all. Linga Purana, describes it as that which is devoid of qualities and above the senses. it is symbolic of the generative power of Shiva. it represents the cosmic egg, the Brahmanda, which is creation by union of prakriti and purusha, the male and the female powers of nature. It also signifies satya, jnana and ananta—truth, knowledge and infinity. In Sanskrit, lingam means a ‘mark’ a symbol, which points to an inference.
